16TH ANNIVERSARY OF DEADLY TORNADO THAT HIT CUMBERLAND COUNTY

Today (Saturday, November 10, 2018) marks the 16th anniversary of a tornado that slammed into the Lake Tansi area of Cumberland County killing four. The F3 tornado also affected the southern sections of Crossville the night of November 10, 2002, injuring 18. When it was said and done, 33 homes were destroyed and 128 were damaged. The heaviest damage was along Lantana Drive, Dunbar Road, and Pigeon Ridge Road. Five homes were damaged on U.S. Highway 127 and just south of Three Creek Road. Officials say 100-year-old oak trees were snapped like wheat straws. Mobile homes on the Ballyhoo Campground and modular homes in Lake Tansi were destroyed. Two of the four fatalities occurred in mobile homes. A couple was killed at 298 Lantana Drive when their mobile home was lifted off its foundation. Officials say 80-year-old Edward Laffer and 75-year-old Mary Laffer were killed. Another couple died at 4040 Lone Wolf Circle where 55-year old Robert Scarbrough and 52-year-old Sandy Scarbrough lost their lives in a framed, partially brick house.
