18TH ANNIVERSARY OF DEADLY TORNADOES IN CUMBERLAND AND MORGAN COUNTY

Yesterday (November 10, 2020) marked the 18th anniversary of a tornado that slammed into the Lake Tansi area of Cumberland County killing four. The F3 tornado also affected the southern sections of Crossville that night, injuring 18. When it was said and done, 33 homes were destroyed and 128 were damaged. The heaviest damage was along Lantana Drive, Dunbar Road, and Pigeon Ridge Road. Five homes were damaged on U.S. Highway 127 and just south of Three Creek Road. Officials say 100-year-old oak trees were snapped like wheat straws. Some mobile homes on the Ballyhoo Campground and modular homes in Lake Tansi were destroyed. Two other smaller twisters touched down in Cumberland County.

A different F3 tornado just minutes later hit Mossy Grove in Morgan County resulting in 7 dead and several injured.

Both tornadoes had wind speeds between 158 to just over 200 miles per hour at times.

The two were part of a large outbreak that took place throughout the day.
