2 YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF “MONSTER” ICE STORM

It’s been two years since Tennessee was hit by a monster ice storm that immobilized the entire Upper Cumberland Region for at least a week. Residents woke up on Saturday, Feb. 21st to an area covered in ice and without power for the most part. The resulting ice froze trees and utility poles so that they became brittle and cracked like eggs. As if the icy road conditions made travel impossible, numerous utility poles and powerlines criss-crossing roadways made them virtually impassable. Police and sheriff’s deputies joined rescue squad and EMS personnel in affecting rescue operations around the area, while firefighters, TDOT workers and volunteers took to the roadways to begin clearing away debris so that emergency vehicles could get by. The American Red Cross created shelters for those who had no power or heat and for days and neighbor helped neighbor in order to survive the ordeal. One death was attributed to the cold during the storm. It took time, but with several linemen coming in from out-of-state, most of the power was restored within a two-week span but work continued for weeks and months before things began to get back to normal.
