43RD ANNIVERSARY OF “SUPER TORNADO OUTBREAK” TODAY

Residents in the 105.7 The Hog listening area are reflecting today on an unusual weather event that took place 43 years ago today. On April 3, 1974 a super outbreak of tornadoes took place that left a total of 319 dead and 5,484 injured in several states. At one point that day, there were 15 different tornadoes ongoing at the same time.

In the 105.7 The Hog listening area, 13 tornadoes touched down that day leaving a total of 24 dead and numerous injured. Three tornadoes hit White and Overton counties, two in McMinn and Fentress counties, and Cumberland, Loudon, Monroe and Putnam counties saw one each. Fatalities were reported in Fentress, McMinn, Putnam and Overton counties.

The most devistating tornado to hit in one county was in Fentress where four different subdivisions near Jamestown sustained direct hits. Seven people were killed and numerous people were injured as a result. Another large tornado tracked through White, Putnam and Overton counties that left ten dead.
