450,000 SMOKE ALARMS RECALLED FOR MAJOR DEFECT

More than 450,000 Kidde smoke alarms have been recalled for a risk of the alarms not working properly in the event of a fire. A yellow cap left on during the manufacturing process can cover one of the two smoke sensors, compromising the smoke alarm’s ability to detect smoke. The recall is specifically for the Kidde dual-sensor (photoelectric and ionization) smoke alarms, models PI2010 and PI9010. The model number and date code are printed on the back of the alarm. There has been one report of the protective cap on a smoke alarm before it was installed in a consumer’s home. There are no reports of the alarm not working as a result of the defect. The smoke alarms were sold at The Home Depot, Walmart, and other department, home, and hardware stores nationwide and online at Amazon.com from September 2016 through January 2018. Consumers are urged to remove the alarm and check to see if a yellow cap is visible. The smoke alarm should not be disassembled and no one should try removing the yellow cap themselves. If the yellow cap is present, immediately contact Kidde to receive a free replacement smoke alarm.
