5.1 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE CENTERED IN WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA
Officials say a 5.1 magnitude earthquake centered near Sparta, North Carolina this morning was felt throughout much of North Carolina, East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia. Aftershocks are possible because of the earthquake’s strong magnitude, but most are usually weaker and not felt as much as the initial quake. It was the strongest in North Carolina since the earthquake in Skyland, North Carolina back in 1916 registering a 5.2 magnitude.
