84-YEAR-OLD FAIRFIELD GLADE MAN SCAMMED OF $9,000

On Wednesday last week, a man stopped by the Fairfield Glade Police Department regarding a scam, saying he received an email from who he believed was PayPal stating he owed 299.99 dollars.
He called the number on the email and was transferred to a specialist who told him his bank account must have been compromised and they pulled up his bank account on his computer screen. They told him they accidentally put $9,000.00 into his bank account and they needed that money back.
The victim stated he went to the bank and took the money out and the bank teller asked him if it was connected to fraud which the victim responded ‘no’. At the time he did not think it was a scam.
He then stated he went to the Bitcoin machine and put the money in, but did not receive a QR-Code or a receipt.
He realized soon after this was a scam and contacted his bank to inform them, who then created a new bank account for him and gave him a new bank card.
The victim told Deputy Fatima Pena that aside from losing the $9,000.00 he should be fine, and he would be cleaning out his computer the next day. Deputy Pena advised the victim to make a report so the case could be on file, and gave him some tips on how to verify if an email was a scam.
He said he learned his lesson from this incident, and he will not be sending any more Bitcoin.
