THEFT REPORTED FROM ELDERLY CUMBERLAND CO. ALZHEIMER’S PATIENT

Cumberland County deputies responded Friday to reports of theft from an elderly Alzheimer’s patient, believed to have been committed over a period of two years. The woman, who now lives in Florida, had been under the care of a Grimsley woman since December 2016.

The victim had noticed a variety of items missing over a period of time, but it was believed she had mislaid them, due to her diminished mental capacity.

According to the incident report, an informant contacted a Fentress County sheriff’s deputy and provided photos of missing items from the victim’s home, seen in the possession of the caregiver within the prior two days, including jewelry and a rare Goldwater tie pin presented to the victim’s husband for his work on Senator Barry Goldwater’s campaign in 1964. Also found were three Sam’s Club IDs belonging to the victim, two of which had her photo on them.

Other items reported stolen were multiple diamonds, a custom-made double-heart necklace, a set of diamond earrings and matching bracelet, a necklace with a mounted gold Krugerrand pendant and $1,400 in cash.

The suspect had supposedly threatened the informant against telling authorities, and had claimed the victim was dead.

An investigation into the matter is underway.
