JOINT MEETING BETWEEN ROANE COUNTY COMMISSION & SCHOOL BOARD

It was the same-ol’ same-ol’ last night in Roane County, as commissioners met with Roane County school board members in a joint workshop at the Harriman High School auditorium. The topic was again possibly consolidating three Roane County high schools into one brand-new mega facility.

Last night’s gathering came just three weeks after a county commissioner suggested the body vote on the plan once and for all, and either put an end to it, or build the new mega school. At that time, following a nearly hour-long discussion, the result was a 30-day postponement.

The County Commission agreed with that request; but then, about a week later, Chairman Randy Ellis requested the workshop held last night. There, interim school director Gary Aytes laid out the plan on the big screen in front of about 200 residents who came out to hear what the school board, hopeful of support from the commissioners, was offering.

The new plan calls for property to be acquired along Highway 70, across from the Roane County Park, and possibly downsizing the structure somewhat, which would limit the burden on taxpayers. No specific figures were given last night of how much it may cost the taxpayers.

More meetings will be scheduled.
