Just before 12:30 p.m. yesterday, Oak Ridge police responded to a two-vehicle crash on Oak Ridge Turnpike at Newport Drive.

One driver, 77-year-old Johnnie Gary of Oak Ridge, was pronounced dead at the scene. The other driver, whose name has not been released, sustained non-life threatening injuries and was taken to Methodist Medical Center for treatment.

There were no passengers in either vehicle, nor any other vehicles involved.

Both westbound lanes and one eastbound lane of the turnpike, between Montana and Nebraska avenues, were closed until about 5:10 p.m., while responding crews investigated and cleared the scene. An investigation is ongoing.

No other details are being released at present.
