The National Drug Take Back program was held Saturday in Cumberland County. The sheriff’s department set up at Kroger and took in just over 111 pounds of unwanted medication. The Crossville Police Department was at Walmart and accepted 24 pounds.

Officers from the Tennessee Danger Drug Task Force was in Crossville this morning to not only collect the medicine from Saturday but also from the permanent metal containers set up in the lobbies of the police department and sheriff’s office.

From those two containers, that saw an additional 854 pounds collected. That brought the total for this year’s drug take back from the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department and Crossville Police Department to 989 pounds of medicine.

The task force then transported the medicine to a certified incinerator in Alabama so the medicine can be destroyed.

Cumberland County Sheriff Casey Cox told 105.7 News this morning that since he has been in office, over 3 tons of medicine has been collected and destroyed.

Citizens wishing to properly get rid of unwanted medication in a safe manner can use the metal collection container in the lobby of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department seven days a week or the lobby of the Crossville Police Department on weekdays.

Acceptable items include prescription medications, over the counter medication, pet medications, medicated ointments, medicated lotions, medicated drops, liquid medication in a leak-proof container, inhalers, or pills in any packaging.

Items not accepted include illegal drugs, needles/sharps or syringes with needles, blood sugar equipment, thermometers, IV bags, bloody or infectious waste, or personal care products.
