ACCIDENT REPORT RELEASED OF FATAL CRASH ON I-40 IN SEVIER COUNTY

The Sevierville Police Department (SPD) released the accident report minutes ago of a fatal multi-vehicle crash over the weekend.

Police officers responded to the accident on Interstate 40 East near exit 407 Saturday evening just before 7 p.m.

According to SPD Crash Reconstruction Officer Phillip West, the preliminary investigation indicates a 2017 Jeep Wrangler driven by 40-year old Darryl Kerr of Morganton, Georgia was traveling west on Interstate 40 when the vehicle crossed the median and crashed into eastbound traffic. Five vehicles were involved. One person died and three others were injured.

The Jeep Wrangler rolled over and Kerr was transported to the U.T. Medical Center via Lifestar.

The driver of a 2015 Subaru Forester, 55-year old Bettina Koelzer of Marian, Iowa died during the crash.

Two passengers in a 2020 Ford Explorer driven by 51-year old Daniel Merrifield of Fallon, Missouri were transported to UTMC by Lifestar after the vehicle rolled over. The passengers were 43-year old Vincee Merrifield and 21-year old Jerra Merrifield.

The drivers of the other two vehicles involved a 2003 Freightliner tractor trailer and a 2019 Nissan Altima-were not transported.

Interstate 40 East was closed from mile marker 402 to the 407 until approximately 11:59 p.m. the same evening. The accident remains under investigation. No charges have been made at this time.
