STRAY BULLET FIRED INTO NEIGHBOR’S BEDROOM WINDOW

On November 3rd Sergeant Jamie Wyatt of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Delbridge Lane area for a possible
vandalism to a window in the residence. Upon arriving, Sgt. Wyatt spoke to the homeowner and her daughter and they escorted him into a bedroom.
In the upper right-hand corner of the bedroom window were two holes, and damage to the blind, with broken glass in between the panes, on the floor of the bedroom, and on a chair that was sitting under the window.
On the floor in the carpet just under the window was a spent handgun round.
When the window was damaged, the blind was down, and the curtains were closed. The curtain that was closed sustained no damage and appeared to stop the round from going any further into the home. It is believed that the damage occurred while both the homeowner and her daughter were gone from the residence.
Captain Mark Rosser arrived on the scene to assist and both deputies took photos.
Due to the angle of the entry into the window, the height of the window from the ground, the condition of the round, the amount of damage to the window, and the fact that if the round were fired from a close distance it would have been fired from the roof of the next door neighbor’s house to match the angle it entered the window.
The deputy said in his report that the shot appeared to be accidental and that the round had traveled quite a distance before striking the window.
Wyatt said it doesn’t appear that there was any malicious intent and the round was not fired into the house on purpose.
