23-YEAR-OLD MAN SCAMMED FOR $1,400 IN APPLE GIFT CARDS
Yesterday Patrol Officer Jacob Zimmerman responded to the Crossville Police Department lobby in regards to a possible fraud. The 23-year-old victim informed Officer Zimmerman that he was on his laptop and a message covered his screen informing him that he had a trojan virus and he needed to contact 833-278-0631 to get it fixed.
The victim contacted the number and spoke with someone alleging to be “Jessica Gray” who then transferred him to another person named “Eric Jones”.
“Jones” told the victim that he needed to send a $300 Apple gift card to add security to his computer, a request that the victim obliged.
“Jones” kept making requests requesting additional funds for added security and the victim ended up sending a total of $1,400 in Apple gift cards.
“Jones” then requested another $500 gift card to return all the money.
It was at this point the victim stopped sending money to “Jones” and ceased communication.
No suspects have been identified and no charges have been filed.
