FAIRFIELD MAN LOSES ALMOST $34,000 IN HACK

On Friday, December 13th, 2024, Fairfield Units were called to Fairfield PD for a scam report. Upon arrival, Jacob Roberts and Sergeant Hammons made contact with the victims in the lobby. Roberts and Sergeant Hammons escorted the two to the back room of the PD, where the male victim informed the officers that he believed he was the victim of an ID scam.

He claims an unknown person hacked into his Fidelity Investments account and stole a total of $33,989.95 via direct transfer of his investments on December 10, 2024. On the 11th, the United Postal Service informed him that he would be receiving a debit card from PNC Bank that he had not signed up for. On the 12th, he received his debit card from PNC Bank.

The victim told Roberts and Hammons that he is very involved in online business and banking. Fidelity Investments notified him they would try and retrieve his money and would alert him if the status of his case with them changed.

However, the victim believes his Social Security, email, date of birth, phone number, and home address were also compromised in this fraud case.

He continued, saying he has Zander Fraud Protection Insurance as well, and that he has trading authority over the IRA accounts for his daughter and son. He believed that they may be in danger as well but said his son has gotten in contact with fraud protection, however, nothing was stated regarding his daughter.

The victim said he has CSID fraud protection. Roberts and Hammons asked the victim and his wife if they had spoken to anyone who had any kind of foreign accent recently and the male victim said he had been speaking to Comcast over the phone and 3 of the 4 representatives he had spoken to were foreign sounding.

Sergeant Hammons collected the victim’s ID and personal notes on the incident to make copies. Roberts and Hammons asked the male victim if his wife had any kind of attachment to his accounts, and he said she was the main beneficiary on all of his accounts.

The two officers suggested to the wife that she contact their fraud department again to secure any of her information from possibly
leaking.

Roberts collected the wife’s information to add to the case and gave the two an IC3 pamphlet to help.
