LOCAL WOMAN BECOMES VICTOM OF WIRE FRAUD

On Wednesday this week, Deputy Dustin Jackson with the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office spoke with a woman in the Justice Center lobby about money being stolen from her account.

She said that the day before, she received a call from Western Union saying that $500 was being withdrawn from her account. She said she didn’t authorize this while speaking to the representative.

The person called from a specific number, and afterward, she contacted Western Union to confirm if it was them. The money was wired without her consent, and she got a case number from Western Union.

She still had possession of her card and said she did not authorize anyone to make the transfer. She’s also unsure how anyone obtained the information.

She told the deputy that she was in Gatlinburg over the weekend and didn’t know if someone might have stolen the information there.

No arrests have been made as no suspects have been identified.
