Cuts in President Donald Trump’s budget proposal would affect more than 1 million Tennesseans using food stamps. As of April 2017, 1,054,752 Tennesseans were enrolled in SNAP benefits, commonly referred to as food stamps. President Trump’s proposed cuts include a whopping $193 billion from food stamps over the coming decade, a cut of more than 25 percent, implemented by cutting back eligibility and imposing additional work requirements. The program presently serves about 42 million people nationwide. According to a report, the proposed budget would also shift 25 percent of SNAP costs to states, costing the Volunteer State $2.9 billion over the next 10 years.

In Tennessee, 67 percent of SNAP participants are families that has children and 30 percent are elderly or disabled.
