OLIVER SPRINGS COUNCIL MEETING CANCELLED
UPDATE:
Tonight’s Oliver Springs Town Council meeting has been cancelled, as announced on the official Oliver Springs Facebook page.
ORIGINAL STORY:
The Oliver Springs Water and Sewer Board is scheduled to meet this Thursday evening, December 4th, at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall for its regularly scheduled meeting. The only item under new business will be to discuss and possibly approve an ordinance authorizing the use of a collection agency to recover unpaid and past-due utility accounts, including water, sewer, garbage collection, late penalties, and any other fees associated with utility billing.
Following the Water and Sewer Board meeting, the Town Council will convene. Its agenda also contains only one action item: consideration of a similar ordinance that, if passed, would authorize the use of a collection agency to collect unpaid fines, court costs, fees, and applicable taxes owed to the town. During the meeting, the Mayor will provide his monthly update, and City Manager Corey Jenkins will report on the finances of both the water/sewer funds and the general city fund balances.
One key reason the town is pursuing a collection agency is that, according to Manager Jenkins, approximately $323,000 in unpaid bills—primarily past-due water bills and back taxes—remain outstanding. Many of these accounts became delinquent and grew out of control during the COVID era.
