FORMER PRODUCING DIRECTOR OF THE CUMBERLAND COUNTY PLAYHOUSE PASSED AWAY
Posted by The Cumberland County Playhouse:
It is with profound sadness that we share that Jim Crabtree, former longtime Producing Director of the Cumberland County Playhouse, has passed away. Jim devoted 60 years of his life to theatre in rural Tennessee — a life defined by imagination, courage, and an unshakeable belief in the power of the arts. He was a brilliant and creative man: a shrewd businessman, an inspired producer and director, a fine actor, a playwright, and above all a visionary leader.
Through his work Jim transformed the Playhouse and helped diversify the cultural life of Crossville and the state of Tennessee. He touched the lives of countless actors, staff, board members, volunteers, and audience members — always generous with time, advice, and encouragement. To those who worked with him he was more than a boss; he was a surrogate father, a mentor, and a guiding light.
We take comfort in imagining Jim and his beloved honey-bird Annie (Ann Windrow Crabtree) reunited — singing and directing the most beautiful choir of angels. His legacy lives on in every corner of the Playhouse walls, and in every life he shaped.
Please share your memories, stories, and photos below so we can honor his memory together. We will post service details as they become available.
