WINTER STORM ALERT

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for a portion of Middle Tennessee, beginning at midnight Friday night and continuing through 6 p.m. Sunday, as a powerful and potentially dangerous winter system moves into the region. Forecasters say a mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain is expected, with total snow and sleet amounts ranging from 2 to 8 inches. Ice buildup could reach up to a quarter inch, enough to weigh down trees and power lines and cause widespread power outages. Travel conditions may deteriorate to the point that driving becomes extremely difficult or impossible, especially during the height of the storm.

At the same time, a Winter Storm Watch is now in effect from Saturday morning through Sunday evening for parts of southwest North Carolina, east Tennessee, and southwest Virginia. According to the National Weather Service, these areas could see up to 3 inches of snow and sleet, mainly north of Interstate 40, with the highest snow totals near the Kentucky state line. Ice accumulation in these regions could range from a quarter inch to as much as a half inch, increasing the risk of power outages, falling trees, and dangerous road conditions. Bridges and overpasses are expected to become slick first, and travel could become nearly impossible at times.

Weather officials stress that this is a complex and evolving forecast, and the exact locations of the heaviest snow and ice are still uncertain. Significant changes are possible over the next day or two, and residents are urged to stay up to date with the latest forecasts from the National Weather Service. Anyone who must travel is advised to carry emergency supplies such as a flashlight, food, and water, and to check current road conditions by calling 511 before heading out.
