EXTREME COLD GRIPS THE REGION
The National Weather Service has issued multiple cold weather alerts across parts of the region, warning of dangerously low wind chills through early Tuesday. In Middle Tennessee, a Cold Weather Advisory is in effect from midnight tonight until 6 p.m. CST Monday, followed by an Extreme Cold Warning from 6 p.m. Monday until noon CST Tuesday. Wind chills are expected to range from 0 to 5 below zero during the advisory period, with values dropping as low as 10 below zero during the extreme cold warning.
Forecasters say these conditions cover most of Middle Tennessee and pose a risk of hypothermia if proper precautions are not taken. Residents are advised to dress in layers, including hats, face coverings, and gloves, and to use caution if traveling outdoors during the coldest periods.
Additional Cold Weather Advisories are also in effect for portions of southwest North Carolina and east Tennessee. The first advisory runs from midnight EST tonight until 10 a.m. EST Monday, with wind chills expected between zero and 10 degrees above zero. A second advisory takes effect from 6 p.m. EST Monday through noon EST Tuesday. The National Weather Service warns that prolonged exposure to these conditions can lead to hypothermia and urges people to wear appropriate cold-weather clothing and keep pets indoors as much as possible.
