MAN ARRESTED FOR THEFT OF MINI BIKE AND HIT-AND-RUN VANDALISM ON SPARTA HIGHWAY

On March 6, 2026, at Pomona Market located on Sparta Highway, a theft and related vandalism incident occurred between approximately 5:11 p.m. and 7:38 p.m. Deputy Jason Powers responded to the scene after being dispatched for a report of theft and a hit-and-run.

Witnesses described a suspect using a gold car to remove a black chopper-style mini bike (valued at $300) from the trunk of a parked vehicle and load it into his own trunk. During the maneuver, the suspect struck and damaged a nearby black 5×14 utility trailer, causing harm to its fold-down tailgate and taillight bracket (repair value unknown at the time). The collision detached the front bumper of the suspect’s gold Honda, which was left behind in the parking lot as the vehicle fled at high speed onto Pomona Road, constituting a hit-and-run involving property damage.

Deputy Powers documented the abandoned gold Honda bumper with body camera footage and obtained information leading to the suspect’s residence on Claysville Road. Along with Deputy L. Janow, he located the matching gold Honda Accord (missing its front bumper) parked behind a barn, with the stolen black mini bike still in the trunk.

Richard Edward Kelly was found inside the residence on Claysville Road and was arrested on-view without incident around 6:50 p.m. that day. The stolen mini bike was recovered and returned to its owner. The property owner at requested a ban, and they were advised accordingly before departing the scene.

Richard Edward Kelly, age 39, faces charges including theft of property, vandalism, and leaving the scene of an accident involving property damage. His court date is set for April 13, 2026, with total bond amounts of $6,000 ($1,000 + $2,500 + $2,500).

The charges and allegations referenced in this release are merely accusations of criminal conduct, not evidence. The defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt and convicted through due process of law.
