MAN ARRESTED AFTER HIDING METH PIPE DURING TRAFFIC STOP IN CROSSVILLE

On March 7, 2026, around 11:17 PM, Deputy Logan Janow of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office observed a red 2011 Hyundai Santa Fe traveling erratically on Dunbar Road, including crossing the centerline and varying speed. The deputy initiated a traffic stop near the Exxon station, but the driver continued past several pull-over spots before stopping in the One Bank parking lot in Tansi. The driver was identified as Ronald James Bittner Jr., 34, of Crossville, with a passenger.

Bittner appeared extremely nervous, sweating, fidgeting, and breathing rapidly. He denied consuming intoxicants and claimed he was simply taking his passenger home after getting takeout. Bittner agreed to field sobriety tests but refused a vehicle search. Due to observed indicators of impairment and suspicious behavior—including Bittner’s unzipped pants and unbuckled belt—he was asked to exit the vehicle. Sergeant Ashburn arrived to assist and spotted cut straws with residue in plain view (one on the driver’s floorboard and two in the center console), along with a clear plastic baggie containing white residue.

Both occupants were detained and patted down. Based on the circumstances, officers suspected Bittner was concealing items in his pants. After being warned about introducing contraband into jail, Bittner admitted to hiding a methamphetamine pipe. He retrieved a glass pipe with burnt residue and a ball of burnt aluminum foil from his person. The passenger later confirmed witnessing Bittner attempting to conceal items during the stop and pull-in.

Numerous drug paraphernalia items were seized from the vehicle and Bittner’s person, including a glass pipe with residue, two straws with residue, a pen with residue, a plastic baggie with residue, and burnt foil—all documented as drug/narcotic equipment. These items were later destroyed under recorded body camera footage.

Bittner was arrested on-view around 11:50 PM for unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia and tampering with evidence. He received bonds of $2,000 and $10,000 respectively, with a court date of April 13, 2026. He was transported to intake and served warrants there.
