BEEHIVE SUBDIVISION MEETS PUSHBACK FROM CROSSVILLE RESIDENTS

The Crossville Regional Planning Commission recently gave the green light to the preliminary plat for the “Beehive subdivision,” a 124-lot residential project spanning roughly 30 acres near Stone Memorial High School. So far, the preliminary plat has been approved.

When the preliminary plat is submitted, several aspects regarding measurements and code compliance have to be inspected and approved over discussions, from there a final plat is designed and submitted for approval, or the infrastructure is constructed, and once permits are approved, final construction begins.

The Crossville Regional Planning Commission consists of:

  • Mayor RJ Crawford, Chairman (Present at April meeting)
  • Kevin Poore, Vice Chairman
  • Rob Harrison, Secretary (Present at April meeting)
  • Jerry Wood
  • Gordon Atchley (Present at April meeting)
  • Landon Headrick (Present at April meeting)
  • James Mayberry

To address safety and traffic flow, the developerโ€”Scott Word of Dillard Construction, and WDS Group GPโ€”agreed to move the main entrance to Beehive Lane and will fund improvements to a sharp curve in the road to meet city standards.

Despite the technical approval, the project has met with significant pushback from local residents concerned about the town’s changing character.

Public comments highlight a deep frustration with “cookie-cutter” developments, tiny lot sizes (averaging under 0.2 acres), and the perceived lack of high-paying local jobs to support the expected $300,000 price tags.

Beyond the houses themselves, the community is calling for urgent infrastructure upgrades, arguing that Cook Road is already too narrow and dangerous for the heavy school bus and tractor-trailer traffic currently using it.
