CUMBERLAND COMMISSION APPROVES RENAMING HIGHWAY PORTION IN HONOR OF FALLEN DEPUTY KEN NELSON

At the Cumberland County Commission meeting on April 20, all commissioners were present except Commissioner Wilson. The commission unanimously approved Resolution 04-2026-3, which petitions the State of Tennessee to rename the Renfro Hollow portion of Highway 70 East in memory of Kenneth “Ken” Nelson (Cooper).

Nelson was a Marine Corps veteran, law enforcement officer, and martial arts instructor who moved to Crossville in the 1970s. He had a significant positive impact on the community through his dojo, where he mentored young people and emphasized discipline and accountability. In January 1988, while serving as a deputy with the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department, he was killed in the line of duty after volunteering to help during hazardous icy road conditions. The resolution honors his service, sacrifice, and lasting legacy in the county.
