OLIVER SPRINGS COUNCIL MEETS AMID STRONG OPPOSITION TO PROPOSED PARK FEES ORDINANCE

The Oliver Springs Town Council held its first meeting in nearly five weeks, drawing a large crowd of concerned citizens who largely opposed a draft ordinance that would impose permits and fees for the use of city-owned parks and other public amenities. Members of the Oliver Springs Historical Society and other residents spoke out against the proposal, citing potential negative impacts on community events such as the annual October Sky Festival at Arrowhead Park. Police Chief David Laxton and City Manager Corey Jenkins explained the rationale behind exploring the fees, while Mayor Jason Stiltner highlighted an incident in which a baseball tournament at Arrowhead Park generated thousands of dollars for organizers but left the city to cover maintenance and cleanup costs at taxpayer expense. No action was taken on the ordinance, as it was presented for discussion only.

During the meeting, the council approved several items, including a proposal from PUGH CPAs for financial compliance audit services, the hiring of Owings, Wilson and Coleman Law Firm for legal services, and authorization for the City Manager to execute an agreement with Chase Bank for business credit card services. The council also considered petitions for speed tables on West Spring Street and Lookout Avenue and planned to review a schedule for the upcoming Budget Workshop. A replay of the meeting will air the following morning at 10 a.m. on the station.
