CROSSVILLE WOMAN SCAMMED OUT OF $800 IN FAKE QUINCEANERA DRESS SALE ON FACEBOOK MARKETPLACE
A Crossville woman reported an online scam to the Crossville Police Department on May 20, 2026. She had listed a Quinceañera dress for sale on Facebook Marketplace for approximately $1,500. A prospective buyer expressed interest, and the two agreed on a final price of $1,550.
After the buyer requested Venmo information, the victim received a suspicious email purporting to be from Venmo claiming that, due to the buyer’s business account, a $400 security deposit was required that would need to be refunded. The parties then switched to using Zelle. The buyer claimed to have sent two $400 payments (one allegedly accidental) and requested reimbursement for both.
Without verifying that the funds had cleared, the victim sent a total of $800 in two transactions to the buyer. Upon discovering that no payments from the buyer had actually arrived, she became suspicious, researched the contact details, and realized the Zelle recipient was an account under the name Amy Miller with the email address waswagy@vehanedin.
The buyer later contacted her again, requesting reimbursement for an additional $190 that Venmo supposedly pulled. The victim has since reported the fraud to her bank and provided screenshots of all messages and transactions, which were logged into Axon evidence by responding officer MPO Justin Farmer.
