ROANE STATE LAUNCHES FIRST-OF-ITS-KIND FIRE SCIENCE PROGRAM IN EAST TENNESSEE FOR FALL 2026

Beginning in Fall 2026, Roane State Community College will launch an all-new academic emphasis in fire science, making it the first higher education institution in the East Tennessee region to offer these specialized courses. Designed for both prospective and current emergency services workers, the program introduces over two dozen courses covering topics like fire investigation, disaster management, and leadership development. Students in the initial cohort will work toward an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in General Technology with a Fire Science emphasis. Thanks to a recent articulation agreement with the University of Tennessee at Martin, all of these credits will seamlessly transfer toward a bachelor’s degree. Roane State is currently seeking full state and institutional approval from the Tennessee Board of Regents and SACSCOC, which is expected to officially transition the degree to a standalone AAS in Fire Science by the end of 2027.

The program has already secured authorization from the Tennessee Commission on Firefighting Personnel Standards and Education to provide both the academic curriculum and key professional certifications, including Firefighter I and II and Hazardous Materials. This enables local firefighters to complete and renew their required state certifications close to home. Developed in close partnership with the Alcoa, Oak Ridge, and Rockwood fire departments, the curriculum ensures students receive hands-on training with industry professionals and real equipment, which will boost local recruitment, retention, and job placement. Looking ahead, Roane State is also exploring dual enrollment opportunities for high school students, with more information available on their website.
