STATE OFFICIALS MONITOR EMORY RIVER FOLLOWING ETHANOL SPILL FROM LANCING TRAIN DERAILMENT

State environmental officials are closely monitoring local water conditions after a Norfolk Southern train derailed near Lancing, causing an ethanol spill into the Emory River.

The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) confirmed that a temporary contact advisory remains active for the affected portions of the river. Crews are actively conducting water quality testing and carrying out cleanup operations.

In the meantime, officials urge the public to avoid all direct contact with the impacted areas of the Emory River until further notice and the advisory is officially lifted.
