Early Wednesday morning, what began as a call regarding a suspicious man harassing local employees ended in a drug arrest and the discovery of an unreported stolen vehicle outside a local business on Highway 70 East.

According to a report from the Crossville Police Department, Officer Amy Sherrill responded to Pure Spin at approximately 4:59 a.m. on July 15 after employees dialed 911. Workers had locked the entrance doors to prevent an erratic man from entering as he repeatedly tried to speak with them from outside.

Upon arrival, officers identified the man as Kelly Scott Hood. Police reported that Hood displayed erratic and incoherent speech, claiming he thought he recognized an employee and began singing words written on the building’s exterior. Hood initially told officers that a friend had driven him to the location in a red SUV parked behind the building.

When officers located the vehicle—a red Nissan Pathfinder with “CLEM” spelled in stickers on the rear windshield—they found a man sitting in the passenger seat. The man claimed ownership of the vehicle, but a registration check revealed the SUV belonged to Laura Estevez, an inmate currently incarcerated at the Cumberland County Jail. He then presented an unsigned title, claiming he had traded another vehicle for it days prior with a man named “Carl.”

During the interaction, officers observed a glass pipe containing burn marks and crystalline residue in plain view on the driver’s seat. Contradicting Hood’s original story, the man told police that Hood had actually been the one driving the SUV.

When questioned again, Hood admitted to driving the vehicle. A consensual search of Hood’s person revealed a small plastic bag hidden behind folded cash in his pocket. The bag contained approximately 0.11 grams of a substance believed to be methamphetamine. Hood claimed the pants were not his and denied knowledge of the drugs.

Further investigation by Senior Patrol Officer Jacob Zimmerman revealed a tangled situation regarding the SUV. When contacted at the jail, Estevez confirmed the vehicle was hers and stated it had been taken without her permission. However, she acknowledged knowing since March that unauthorized individuals were driving her vehicle, yet she had never formally reported it stolen. Because no police report had ever been filed, theft charges were not pursued at the scene. The SUV was impounded by Young’s Towing to be held until Estevez’s release.

Hood was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office. He faces charges of Public Intoxication and Simple Possession of Methamphetamines. The seized drug evidence was logged to be sent to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) for laboratory analysis, and the glass pipe was documented and destroyed.
