A Fairfield Glade resident lost $1,850 after falling victim to a phone scam involving impersonators posing as law enforcement.

According to Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office incident reports, the 64-year-old victim received a call on the morning of July 30, 2026, from an individual claiming to be “Sgt. Ingram” with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office in Florida. The caller informed the resident that their son was currently incarcerated and requested an $1,850 bond payment to secure his release.

To add legitimacy to the fraud, the scammer spoofed the actual phone number for the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, causing the victim to trust the caller’s authenticity. The suspect instructed the resident to transfer the funds using the peer-to-peer payment platform Cash App.

The victim’s spouse completed the transfer using her mobile device. Shortly after sending the money, the resident called the Lee County Sheriff’s Office directly to check on their son’s release status, only to be informed that no bond payment had been received and that they had been targeted by scammers.

During the aftermath, the household discovered that another family member had also received a nearly identical fraudulent call attempting to solicit bail money for the same son. The victim planned to contact their bank to dispute the transaction and filed an official report with local authorities as advised.
