Local law enforcement is urging residents to remain vigilant following a surge in reports concerning a deceptive jury duty scam targeting the community.

According to the Blount County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO), scammers have been contacting individuals by phone, falsely claiming that recipients will face arrest for missing jury duty unless they pay an immediate fine. Perpetrators of the scheme have gone as far as using the name of a retired BCSO deputy to trick victims into believing the calls are legitimate.

Authorities emphasize that legitimate law enforcement agencies will never demand payment over the phone for missed court appearances, outstanding warrants, or ankle monitoring. Furthermore, deputies will never request sensitive financial information, such as credit card numbers, bank accounts, gift cards, or cryptocurrency, via telephone.

Officials note that these fraudulent calls frequently originate from internet-generated or spoofed numbers designed to mimic trusted local organizations.

How to Protect Yourself:

• Verify Directly: If you receive a suspicious call claiming to be from law enforcement, hang up and call the Sheriff’s Office directly to confirm.

• Never Pay Over the Phone: Refuse to provide payment or financial details to unsolicited callers who use threats or pressure tactics.
