KINGSTON DROPS FLOCK SAFETY CAMERA CONTRACT OVER FINANCIAL CONCERNS
The City of Kingston will not renew its contract with automated license plate reader provider Flock Safety when it expires this September, according to City Manager David Bolling.
The city initially entered into a two-year agreement in 2024 for two cameras at a total cost of $12,300. Bolling stated that the decision was purely financial, noting that the perceived benefits of the technology did not justify the expense. The allocated funds will instead be redirected to other areas within the police department.
The decision comes amid widespread public debate surrounding Flock Safety cameras. While law enforcement agencies frequently cite the technology as a successful tool for solving crimes, critics have raised ongoing concerns regarding privacy and civil liberties.
