Two 19-year-old Crossville residents were arrested late Wednesday night following a high-speed vehicle pursuit on Lantana Road that reached speeds up to 120 mph, according to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident unfolded on August 27, 2026, at approximately 9:49 p.m. Deputy Holden Atkinson was patrolling Lantana Road near Miller Avenue when he clocked a silver car traveling at 78 mph in a 45 mph zone. When the deputy activated his emergency lights to initiate a traffic stop, the vehicle fled, turning off its lights entirely.

During the ensuing pursuit, the suspect vehicle accelerated to 98 mph and later hit 120 mph as it navigated a curve, passing other vehicles along Lantana Road. The chase ended when the fleeing vehicle crashed into the oncoming lane’s shoulder near Pigeon Ridge Road, narrowly avoiding a head-on collision with an elderly couple stopped in the roadway.

The driver, identified as Jayden Andrew Shaffer, exited the vehicle and attempted to walk away before being taken into custody at gunpoint by deputies. The passenger, Sydney Addison Lawyer, was safely ordered out of the vehicle and detained.

A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed two marijuana carts near the gear shift and a bottle of Wheatley vodka on the passenger-side floorboard.

Both suspects are scheduled to appear in General Sessions Court on October 5, 2026, at 8:30 a.m. The vehicle was towed from the scene by Mackie’s Towing, and the elderly occupants of the vehicle nearly struck in the road were uninjured.
