CHERYSE SEBURN IS BACK IN COURT FACING MULTIPLE CHARGES INCLUDING CHILD ABUSE AFTER HIGH-SPEED I-40 TRAFFIC STOP

A Cumberland County woman is facing a series of serious criminal charges in court tomorrow following a dramatic traffic stop on Interstate 40 that led to the discovery of a five-month-old infant buried beneath a pile of items in the back seat.
Cheryse Katrina Seburn was arrested on June 19, 2026, after Deputy Jordan Winningham of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department pulled over her white Kia Optima for traveling 87 mph in a 70 mph zone during hazardous weather.
According to court documents, the stop quickly escalated when Seburn refused to step out of the vehicle as ordered. Following a brief struggle, deputies took her into custody and uncovered multiple violations during a search:
  • Child Endangerment: A five-month-old infant was found in the back seat, unbuckled, in an improperly installed car seat, and completely buried under a pile of miscellaneous items.
  • Contraband & Licensing: Deputies recovered approximately 7.32 grams of marijuana, and a background check revealed Seburn was driving without a valid license.
  • Resisting Law Enforcement: Seburn resisted the initial arrest and later refused to sign citations at the detention facility.
Formal charges were filed in Cumberland County General Sessions Court on June 22, 2026. Seburn’s case includes felony reckless endangerment, child abuse/neglect/endangerment, reckless driving, resisting arrest, driving without a license, and casual exchange of marijuana.
Represented by the Public Defender’s office, Seburn appeared in court following her arrest. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
