CUMBERLAND COUNTY RESIDENT LOSES $15,000 IN SOPHISTICATED GIFT-CARD SCAM
The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office and Fairfield Glade Police are issuing a warning to local residents following a computer pop-up scam that resulted in a $15,000 financial loss.
According to police reports, a local resident received a fraudulent computer pop-up falsely claiming that both their computer and financial accounts had been compromised. After calling the phone number displayed on the screen, the victim was directed by the scammer to purchase gift cards and surrender the card details.
Fairfield Glade Police documented the incident, though no suspects have been identified or arrested at this time.
Authorities urge residents to remain vigilant against tech support scams. Law enforcement reminds the public that legitimate tech companies will never demand payment via gift cards, cryptocurrency, or wire transfers, nor will they lock your computer and demand immediate phone calls to resolve security alerts.
