ROANE COUNTY COMMISSION TO HOLD PUBLIC HEARING ON PROPOSED MORATORIUM FOR DATA CENTERS AND BATTERY STORAGE FACILITIES

The Roane County Commission will hold its monthly meeting this Monday evening, October 19, at 6:00 PM at the courthouse in Kingston. The meeting was shifted from its usual schedule to the third Monday of the month due to Columbus Day.
A major focus of the evening will be a public hearing at 6:00 PM regarding a proposed temporary moratorium. The measure would halt the acceptance, processing, and approval of applications for data centers, cryptocurrency mining operations, battery storage facilities, and battery energy systems. This pause is intended to give the county time to develop comprehensive planning, zoning, and building regulations.
This proposed resolution builds upon a previous measure approved by commissioners in July, which placed a two-year moratorium specifically on data centers but did not cover cryptocurrency or battery facilities.

Additional Agenda Items

  • Committee Appointments: Commissioners will consider appointments to various committees for the upcoming fiscal year under new business.
  • Budget Resolutions: Several routine budget-related resolutions will be reviewed.
  • School Safety Signage: The agenda includes a proposed resolution establishing an official speed zone for Mount Pisgah Christian Academy along Highway 61. Flashing speed zone signs are already in place, with an official ribbon-cutting ceremony scheduled for Tuesday of next week.
