AVALON CENTER SHINES LIGHT ON THE COMPLEXITIES OF LEAVING ABUSIVE RELATIONSHIPS FOR DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH

In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month this October, the Avalon Center Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Program is working to reshape the public conversation around leaving abusive relationships.
Addressing the common question, “Why don’t they just leave?”, Avalon Center advocates emphasize that escaping an abusive situation involves far more than simply packing a bag. Survivors must navigate complex, high-stakes challenges including:
  • Safety and Risk: Evaluating the immediate dangers and preparing for potential escalation.
  • Logistics & Stability: Securing housing, transportation, employment, and technology security.
  • Family & Finances: Protecting children, pets, financial resources, and critical personal documents.
  • Legal Processes: Managing court requirements and ongoing legal safety measures.
Rather than pressuring survivors to leave immediately, advocates focus on comprehensive safety planning. This process involves assessing risks, preparing for various scenarios, and identifying safe individuals, locations, and community resources to ensure departures are handled as safely as possible.
The Avalon Center emphasizes that survivors do not need to have everything figured out before seeking support. Advocates are available to listen, help explore available options, and support individuals in making the decisions that are right for them.
If you or someone you know is impacted by domestic violence, support is available. You can reach out to the Avalon Center for confidential guidance, safety planning, and resources.
