CUMBERLAND COUNTY OFFICIALLY PROCLAIMS NOVEMBER 2026 AS AMERICAN INDIAN HERITAGE MONTH
Cumberland County Mayor Allen Foster has officially proclaimed November 2026 as American Indian Heritage Month in the county.
Acting on behalf of the Crab-Orchard Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Mayor Foster issued the proclamation to honor the enduring history, culture, and profound contributions of American Indians and indigenous peoples to the nation.
The declaration highlights the historical evolution of the observance—which began as Native American Awareness Week in 1976 before being expanded by Congress and President George H.W. Bush in August 1990 to designate November as National American Indian Heritage Month.
In the proclamation, Mayor Foster encourages all Cumberland County residents to take time this month to celebrate the traditions, languages, and stories of Native American, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, and Island communities, ensuring their rich legacies continue to thrive for future generations.
