CUMBERLAND COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETS

The Cumberland County Board of Education met last night.

Two new principals were introduced to the board by the Director of Schools Janet Graham. Angela Randolph will be at Pine View Elementary School and Candice Cook at Homestead Elementary School.

Melissa Turner, a food nutrition employee at Cumberland County High School, was recognized for being the state nutrition 2018 Employee of the Year, as well as the Helen B. Smith Award recipient.

Stone Memorial High School Principal Dr. Scott Maddox informed the board the school will soon have a new Asian-language class to offer to students.

Teachers in the Cumberland County School System now have an insurance plan after the board of education approved one last night. Out of several in consideration, Plan E was approved, which fully covers a teacher and children and covers 45 percent of costs for a teacher’s spouse. The plan reportedly will save the school system just over $353,000 and School Board Member Don Hassler wants to see that to toward teachers’ salaries.

The board approved policies regarding school support organizations, compensation guides and contracts, grievances and emergency closings on first readings. The board passed policies pertaining to promotion and retention, suspension or dismissal of non-certified employees, sick leave, family and medical leave and county-wide employee dress code on second reading.
