ACCIDENTAL SHOOTINGS IN TENNESSEE NEARLY DOUBLE FROM SAME TIME IN 2015

According to officials, accidental shootings in Tennessee have nearly doubled in 2016 from the previous year. At this time last year, 32 accidental shootings involving adults and children had been logged. As of August of 2016, there have been 62. An organization named The Safe Tennessee Project says that the common denominator in most of the incidents is carelessness, whether it be from an adult leaving a loaded gun around to a firearm being accidentally dropped and discharging. The group tracks shootings across the state and cross references the information with the nonprofit Gun Violence Archive. Of the 62 reported accidents to-date, 16 of those involved children finding a loaded gun. They say Tennessee lacks proper safe storage laws to protect children. The project will also bring back Makayla’s Bill this coming legislative session since the bill was squashed in committee earlier this year.
