ANDERSON COUNTY SCHOOL SYSTEM BEING INVESTIGATED BY DCS AFTER INCIDENT INVOLVING AUTISTIC CHILD

The Anderson County School System is reportedly being investigated by the Department of Child Services after a recent incident at Lake City Elementary School.

Officials say a Pre-K / Kindergartner-age autistic child walked out of the school and down to the creek by the school. The student was not noticed missing until a passerby notified the school that a child was in the creek.

In a social media post, the student’s mother stated her son walked past the teacher who was supposed to be watching the children.

“The biggest gut punch of it all was the surveillance video shows a school staff member was sitting by the door on her cell phone not paying attention when my son decided to walk out the door. He was unsupervised for 30 whole minutes because she chose to sit on her phone in the middle of the gym my child was out of sight for 30 minutes because she chose to pick her phone up instead of watching the class and she was right by the door the whole time it’s such a disappointing feeling to know that is the reason he was able to just walk out of the door that day. Thank you to the man who waved down the teachers and got their attention that my child was in the water.”

The Anderson County School System reportedly did not notify the mother that her son was missing until the event was over.
