BODY FOUND IDENTIFIED AS MISSING COLLEGE STUDENT

Blount County Sheriff James Lee Berrong said a body recovered in Georges Creek in Louisville is that of missing college student Blake Smith. Smith was identified earlier today during an autopsy at the Knox County Regional Forensic Center. The preliminary cause of death was determined as hypothermia/drowning, and his death appears to be accidental. Deputies with the Blount County Sheriff’s Office located Smith’s body in Georges Creek yesterday afternoon through the use of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). Yesterday, Sheriff’s deputies responded to a construction site on Ballards Way in Louisville to the call of a missing person where they found Smith’s crashed vehicle, as well as his cell phone and some other personal belongings. A sheriff’s office K-9 team searched the area but was unsuccessful in locating him. Today, the sheriff’s office UAV operator spotted a body in Georges Creek, and shortly afterward members of BSORT (Blount Special Operations Response Team) recovered the body. Smith’s body was located approximately a half mile from the construction site. The sheriff’s office conducted the investigation jointly with the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, as they took the initial missing person’s report on Smith. Smith was a student at Crown College in Powell.
