BODY FOUND IN BURNED HOME IN SOUTHERN FENTRESS COUNTY

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is looking into a house fire in the Grimsley area of Fentress County Saturday morning (December 2, 2017) that claimed a life. According to Leslie Earhart with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, at the request of 8th District Attorney General Jared Effler, special agents with the TBI responded to assist the Fentress County Sheriff’s Department to determine the circumstances surrounding the fire in the 1,000 block of Maynard Drive in Grimsley. Earhart confirms a body was found inside the rubble of the mobile home after the blaze was extinguished. The body was sent to the regional forensic center in Knoxville for an autopsy. The identity of the deceased was not released by authorities. A cause of the fire is undetermined at this time. Sources indicate that officers learned that a vehicle that was supposed to be at the residence was missing. The vehicle was later discovered in Morgan County operated by 47-year-old Jonathan Smith of Morgan County. He was arrested on drug charges out of Morgan County and on outstanding warrants in Scott County. The investigation remains active and ongoing.
