BUTCH JONES MEETS WITH UT ABOUT HIS FUTURE WITH VOLS

Sources close to the Tennessee football program say that university officials met yesterday (Sunday, October 29, 2017) to discuss the immediate future of Coach Butch Jones after the team’s 29-26 loss to Kentucky. Jones has no plans to resign from his position as Tennessee’s head football coach after meeting yesterday with athletic director John Currie. The Vols have four consecutive losses entering into this Saturday’s homecoming game against Southern Miss (5-3) at 7:30 p.m. at Neyland Stadium. Many Vol fans have expressed displeasure in Jones remaining head coach. But Jones’ situation is a bit more complicated. There are recruiting class implications as well as the schools’ preparedness to find a replacement and pay what would be a buyout of approximately $8.3 million. Tennessee has five football assistants who have experience as full-time or interim head coaches, but Currie has not expressed any interest in going down that road. Jones is expected to hold his regular press conference today (Monday, October 30, 2017) at noon. The Vols are 3-5 this season and have yet to win an SEC game, losing to Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama and Kentucky. This comes on the heels of news that the University of Florida decided to part ways with head coach Jim McElwain yesterday (Sunday, October 29, 2017). The Gators, who beat Tennessee this year in Gainesville, are off to a 3-4 start and fresh off a 42-7 loss to Georgia.
