CITY OF CROSSVILLE SEEKING RAW WATER SUPPLY ALTERNATIVES

Tuesday night, the Crossville City Council received a study on the city’s raw water supply. The analysis was given by Greg Davenport of Wauford Engineering who noted that the study has been talked about for the past 20 years. Davenport said that Phase 1 included a 20 to 50 year water usage study of the area’s three raw water sources: Lake Holiday, Meadow Park Lake and water harvesting from Lake Tansi. The study includes a 30% growth for the city for 20 years and a 70% growth for 50 years. Davenport cited the fact that since 1980, the city has grown exponentially at 34% and if that growth continues, another source of raw water will have to be found. Council Member JH Graham commented that those numbers actually grew 30% during three different censuses making the numbers all-the-more significant. All of the alternatives given included the raising of the Meadow Park Dam and harvesting of Lake Tansi, Lake Holiday and included harvesting Watts Bar, which was frowned upon by the council. The company’s recommendation was for the city to get together with the Army Corps of Engineers to discuss obtaining a permit. Davenport said that it would take a year to investigate the alternate sources. City Mayor James Mayberry said that this has been going on for years with several studies having been conducted. He said that the city needed to “get on it.”
