CLAIBORNE COUNTY RESIDENTS PROTESTING MOUNTAIN TOP REMOVAL MINE
A group of residents in a northern Tennessee town are trying to fight a potential threat to their drinking water an environmental status. The Kopper Glo Mining Company is moving forward with a 1500 acre mountain top removal mine on Cooper Ridge; an area in Claiborne County located north of Knoxville. The Tennessee Dept. of Environment and Conservation approved Phase I of the mine’s National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES). Kopper Glo Mining is now seeking approval of a Phase II NPDES permit. However, there are those that say the mine will adversely impact streams in the Clearfork River Watershed as well as affecting the drinking water of 550 families. The residents will be holding an informational public meeting Wednesday at the Cove Lake State Park Recreational Building from 7-9 PM EST.
