COMPETENCY HEARING SET FOR NOSTROM CHARGED WITH DOUBLE MURDER

Cumberland County Criminal Court Judge Gary McKenzie set a hearing date this morning for June 22, 2021 to determine if 75-year-old Warren John Nostrom is competent to stand trial on two counts of first-degree murder. He is accused of fatally shooting 58-year-old Joy Nostrom and 54-year-old Mark Gunter in the parking lot of the school bus garage on Genesis Road in Crossville back in September 2018. Warren Nostrom then reportedly tried to shoot himself in the head but survived.

Howard Upchurch, the attorney who represents Warren Nostrom, told the judge today he intends to call two mental health experts for the hearing to speak on the mental capacity of his client. Assistant District Attorney General Phillip Hatch informed the court he will have his own expert who evaluated Nostrom give testimony that day.

The judge could rule on the competency motion after the hearing concludes.

Should Nostrom be determined to be mentally fit to answer the charges, his trial will get underway September 14, 2021.

Nostrom continues to be held by the Tennessee Department of Corrections at the Lois M. DeBerry Special Needs Facility, a maximum-security prison in Nashville. It houses prisoners with multiple and complex medical problems.
