It’s being called “The Great American Eclipse” and Cumberland County is said to be in one of the prime spots of the United States in which to view it. The event, which takes place on Monday, Aug. 21^st at 1:27 PM, is a once-in-a-lifetime chance where the moon comes between the Sun and Earth, causing its’ shadow to blackout the sun in certain locations across the globe. Several preparations are being made as an influx of tourists is expected to come to the area for the viewing. According to reports, motels are booked solid, and Police Chief David Beaty told 1057 News that both day and night squads will be brought in, mainly to oversee what is expected to be a high-volume of traffic. Many school systems in the viewing area will be off that day, however, Cumberland County Schools will be in normal session. Director of Schools Janet Graham says that the school system has coordinated with law enforcement for that day, and that individual schools will be hosting their own events in relation to the eclipse. All students will receive the special eclipse glasses in which they will be able to view the sight without harm to their eyes. In fact, anyone wishing to see the total eclipse is advised to get a pair of the glasses. Looking at the Eclipse without the proper eye protection can do harm to your eyes.
