CROSSVILLE CITY COUNCIL ADDRESSES REHIRING OF RETIREES
Earlier this week, the Crossville City Council continued their discussion on the subject of rehiring retirees. The issue has come up since the rehiring of David Beaty as chief of police; a position that he formerly retired from two years ago. The matter centers around the fact that, upon his returning as a city employee, Chief Beaty must start over again in the Tennessee Consolidated Retirement System, which costs the city more money than the current retirement system, the ICMA. TCRS requires an 18 percent match of the employee’s salary while the ICMA requires up to 8 percent. HR Director Leah Crockett was absent from the work session so the discussion was led by new City Manager Greg Wood who told the council that in a regional comparison, only 2 out of 14 cities allowed retirees to return to work and only in smaller cities for less pay. Wood’s recommendation was to go forward with the hiring, but a policy would have to be put in place so that if such an occurrence should arise again, all parties involved would know the consequences of the action.
